At that concert we also debuted the title track, which is the spiritual heart and soul of the whole project. We thought we’d share the lyrics with you here, and the next series of blogs will likely include details about the project and the fundraising effort as we keep plugging away to meet our deadline to get it out early this summer!
The Fiddle Preacher
Lyrics and Music by Peter Danzig (© 2015)
When I was a young boy I’d watch my father play
He would fiddle I would dance, we’d while the night away.
I asked him, “daddy, why’s the music make me move?”
He said, “Listen to me son, I’ll tell you something true.”
Some preach so hot you can smell the fire.
Others preach and you know they’re liars.
Some preach so sweet you give heaven a chance,
But when the fiddle preaches you get up and dance!
I spent some time in church, sought a purpose driven life,
Learned to do my duty and set childish things aside
But I kept my daddy’s fiddle and sometimes late at night
I’d bust into a song and just enjoy the ride.
Some preach so hot you can smell the fire.
Others preach and you know they’re liars.
Some preach so sweet you give heaven a chance,
But when the fiddle preaches you get up and dance!
As I look across my life all the finest things I’ve done
I’ve ignored the ninety-nine, learned to listen to the one.
When I’m standing at the crossroads wondering what to do
I listen to the fiddle and the way it makes me move.
Some preach so hot you can smell the fire.
Others preach and you know they’re liars.
Some preach so sweet you give heaven a chance,
But when the fiddle preaches you get up and dance!
Get up and dance!
